I spent a lot of yesterday troubleshooting some website issues related to one of my work projects. In one case, a theme developer had left three absolute urls to a development sandbox in the code (which means on a new server, those urls no longer work, resulting in long page loads and 404 errors).

Reflecting on the day reminded me of the similar time involved in producing a piece of academic writing. While the ‘problems’ are sometimes not so apparent in writing (as in code–at least when something ‘breaks’), a good piece of writing often takes many iterations, writing and rewriting. And like code, editing has the potential to introduce new problems. But patience and discipline in the editing process is what, for me, produces the best result.
